Russia’s consul general in Egypt, Viktor Voropaev, confirmed the death of a Russian citizen in the waters off Hurghada and said he was a permanent resident of Egypt, not a tourist.

“The Russian died as a result of a shark attack,” said the consul general, according to Russian outlet Tass, and warned citizens to be careful at sea.

Local authorities said beaches in the area had been closed as a result.

Fatal shark attacks are rare, with just 11 recorded in 2011, according to the International Shark Attack File run by the Florida Museum of Natural History.
